Most of the time, our dogs don’t hesitate when we put food in their bowl. They’ll eat it almost immediately after finishing (which usually takes no more than a minute) and give you a look that says, “That’s it?” There are times, however, when a pooch might not be as quick to scarf down his food, or other instances where he might be showing signs that a change in diet would be best. If that happens, deciding what to switch his food to can be quite a challenge. You want to feed your pet the best, but for him to also enjoy his food. Cue Chef’s Best Dog Food, the healthy, easy to prepare food that dogs love.
But first it’s important to recognize the signs that indicate that it could be time to change things up.
There are some dogs who can eat basically any kind of food and never give you any reason to believe a change is needed. Then there are others who seem to be allergic to everything, and as a result, you constantly have to switch his diet.
If your dog is showing any signs of a rash on his stomach or he tends to itch a lot, those may be signs that he’s allergic to the food you’re giving him. It could be an allergy involving a certain type of grain, a dairy product or some other ingredient. Many brands have chemical additives that could bring on an allergic reaction. Talk to your veterinarian to see what he or she might recommend.
One of the red flags that indicate a change in diet will be necessary is if your dog is gaining weight even though you haven’t altered his portions.1 While getting him some more exercise will help, he might also need a different type of food. On the other hand, if he seems like he’s losing weight, he might have an issue obtaining the nutrients he needs. Take him to the vet to see what the cause of his weight loss may be.
Weakness or Lethargy
Dogs can sometimes seem lethargic or week after some sort of illness, a surgical procedure or after going through some sort of stressful event. One of the things you might consider trying is switching him to a diet that’s rich in antioxidants.2 These can help stimulate the immune system and help him bounce back faster. But if his lethargy has come on all of a sudden, then you’ll need to take him to the vet to see what’s going on.
How to Introduce Your Dog to a New Diet
Changing your dog’s food isn’t something that can happen overnight. It will take a little time for him to completely adjust, so be prepared for a gradual process.
It’s usually best to keep some of the old food on hand so you can make the proper transition. If you try to switch to Chef’s Best Pet too quickly, that could lead to digestive problems.3 Gradually lower the amount of old food and increase the amount of new food until he’s only eating the new food. He should be eating the new food within five days. On Day 1 of the transition, give him a 75/25 ratio of old food to new. Day 2, then move to a 60/40 ratio.
Make sure he’s drinking plenty of water to avoid the possibility of dehydration, and look at his poops to make sure they’re normal. Be on the lookout for any signs of stomach problems during the transition. While they’re rare, they can happen.
You might need to slow down the transition a bit if you’re seeing any indications that he’s having issues. If he simply doesn’t want to change, or he is showing the signs of serious problems, talk to your vet.
